Bsc OT Course: What to Find Inside the Operating Room?

The qualified and knowledgeable technician is required to be flexible and meet the immediate requirements of the surgeons, physicians, nurse and others present in the operating room. The operating room

The OT course does gives the candidate a clear picture of what is to be expected in the operating room, what is to be done, the different types of instruments to be used and what is expected from the others. The operating room is also known as the surgery centre and is the hospital’s unit, where there are performed surgical procedures. It is equipped and designed to perform different types of surgeries and to offer patients with treatment to take care of various types of medical conditions. As a matter of fact, the patients are provided with specialized care within the OT setting.

Sterile environment

By nature, OT rooms are considered to be sterile environments, designed to safeguard the patient upon whom operation is being performed. Every medical attendant including the surgeon and the OT technician is expected to use protective clothing known as scrubs to prevent germs from spreading. Also, they are required to wear eye shields, masks, shoe covers, caps along with other coverings. The OT room is lit brightly, to perform operations without any hassle. Every medical personnel present in the room has an important role to play including the OT technician. What is to be done and avoided is taught at the course. Any delay in their taking appropriate and timely action will mean, giving way to complications and issues faced by the patient.

Instruments

There are plenty of instruments used while performing surgical procedures. For internal and external treatments, these are different. Sedation or anaesthesia is used of various forms and levels to unconscious the patient. Special equipment is used in the OT room, which includes devices meant for patient monitoring, cardiac and respiratory support, diagnostic tools, etc. Some commonly used special equipment within the OT room setting.

  • Infusion pump: Fluids are delivered through the catheter. Being programmable, it allows the person to deliver the patient with drugs, anaesthesia including blood infusions.
  • Ventilator: It is also known as respirator used to control or help pulmonary ventilation. Microprocessors control it and it is programmable and allows the professional to regulate pressure, flow of respiration and volume.
  • Diagnostic equipment: There are used few auxiliary devices like mobile x-ray units, which are portable units and generator powered and other devices being handheld.
  • Pulse oximeter: It is used to monitor level of oxygen present in blood and has sensor clipped over the patient’s toe or finger.

The candidate is taught to make use of the different types of devices inside and outside the OT Course and help the others during the operation.
